Amos Kipruto finally won the Chicago Marathon at his third straight attempt, running an unofficial 2:01:09 after finishing third in 2024 and second last year. The time equals the fifth-fastest marathon ever run. Ethiopia's Tadese Bikila took second, 1:47 back, while defending champion Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda faded to fourth in 2:04:18.

Hawi Feysa kept her women's title, breaking away from Kenya's Sharon Lokedi in the final mile to win in 2:13:33, with Lokedi 34 seconds behind.

The home crowd had two American performances to cheer. Emma Grace Hurley, 28, placed seventh in 2:20:47, the fastest marathon debut by a US woman, beating Fiona O'Keeffe's 2:22:10 from the 2024 Olympic Trials. Clayton Young, also seventh, ran 2:05:23 on a torn hamstring, the second-fastest American time on a record-eligible course but short of the 2:04:43 record his training partner Conner Mantz set in Chicago a year ago.

"It was either win or die for me," Kipruto told NBC 5 Chicago.

The marathon majors season closes in New York on November 1.
