Citroen has brought the 2CV name back as a small electric city car, shown as a concept on the eve of the Paris Motor Show, which opens on Monday. The company says a production version should reach showrooms by 2028, at a price expected to be around £13,000 (about €15,000).

The concept keeps the cues that made the original recognisable: tall flared wheel arches, a high curved roof and round, eye-like headlights. The first 2CV arrived in 1948 as cheap, tough transport for rural France and stayed in production for more than four decades, ending up as a cult car.

Citroen chief executive Xavier Chardon called it "a modern, ingenious and refreshing response to the mobility challenges of tomorrow".

The move follows a wider turn by European carmakers to their back catalogues as they try to sell electric cars to wary buyers. Renault has revived the 5, 4 and Twingo, and Volkswagen's ID. Buzz recalls its classic van. With a record Chinese turnout in Paris this year, about a third of exhibitors, heritage is one thing the established names can sell that newcomers cannot, though analysts say the car will still need to compete on price and practicality to sell in volume.
