LA28 has sold six million tickets and is switching off the system that rationed them
From 2027 Olympic seats go on sale first-come, first-served with no purchase caps โ while LA28 takes its own resale market in-house.

LA28 says it has now sold more than six million tickets to the 2028 Olympic Games, and that the vast majority of the inventory it has released so far is gone. Its response is not to release the rest the same way. From 2027 Olympic tickets go on general sale first-come, first-served, and the purchase limits that governed the sales to date come off.
That is a larger change than the headline number. The sales so far โ two ticket drops plus a Visa presale โ used the rationing model that has become standard for oversubscribed events: register in advance, wait for an allotted buying window, buy within a capped quantity. It exists to stop a small number of buyers taking a large share of a scarce pool. The organising committee is retiring it.
Why the caps come off
Purchase limits are a defence against brokers rather than against fans, and they make sense while inventory is scarce and the resale market belongs to somebody else. LA28 is changing both halves of that at once. Alongside the switch to first-come, first-served it will launch a verified resale programme through its own official secondary marketplace and through AXS and Eventim.
Read together, the two moves look like one decision. A rights-holder that captures resale no longer needs to ration the primary sale to keep brokers out, because the margin from hoarding lands back inside its own system instead of outside it. The caps were protecting a market LA28 did not control; it now intends to control it.
What is still to come
No date has been set for the 2027 opening. LA28 has said more sports will have inventory available by then, and that the first Paralympic ticket drop will launch in the same year โ a sale with no public phase at all so far, for a Games the committee describes as Los Angeles's first Paralympics and one of the largest in history.
"The demand we've seen across both drops is a powerful signal that the world is energized for LA28," chairperson and president Casey Wasserman said.
For anyone running a large recurring event, the sequencing is the transferable part rather than the six million. Selling most of your inventory before you have to compete with your own resellers is what buys you the freedom to stop rationing โ and taking the resale market in-house is what makes lifting the caps safe.
