Merino's stoppage-time strike sends Spain past Portugal and ends Ronaldo's World Cup
The midfielder's late winner in Arlington knocks Portugal out and closes the curtain on Cristiano Ronaldo's sixth and final World Cup.

Spain are through to the World Cup quarter-finals and Cristiano Ronaldo's tournament career is over, after Mikel Merino struck in second-half stoppage time to settle a taut last-16 tie 1-0 in Arlington, Texas.
For much of the night the two Iberian neighbours cancelled each other out, Portugal defending deep and Spain probing patiently without a clear opening. The breakthrough came when it was least expected, deep into added time, with Merino arriving to finish and send Luis de la Fuente's side into raptures. The goal stretched Spain's remarkable unbeaten run to 35 matches, drawing level with their longest in history, and kept the pre-tournament favourites firmly on course.
The result carried a heavier weight on the other bench. Ronaldo, who had said before the finals that this would be his last World Cup, walked off knowing his pursuit of the one prize that always eluded him is finished. The 41-year-old still leaves a mark on the 2026 edition as the first player to score at six different World Cups, having also notched his first knockout-stage goal at the finals a round earlier against Croatia. With the 2030 World Cup co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, his global journey closes just before his own country helps stage the game's biggest event.
Spain now move on to a quarter-final against the winner of the United States and Belgium, with de la Fuente's young and fluent side installed among the favourites to go all the way. Portugal, so long shaped around their talisman, face a summer of transition. For one storied rivalry, the chapter ended with a single Spanish swing of the boot in Texas, and a quiet walk to the tunnel from the most prolific scorer the international game has known.
