New York's Joint Operations Center will run at full strength for Sunday's TCS New York City Marathon, with city, state and federal agencies watching camera feeds along the 26.2-mile route and scanning social media for threats, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Wednesday.
Response units will be deployed citywide to chase down reports as they come in. Spectators in viewing areas face bag checks, and coolers, chairs, umbrellas, oversized bags and weapons are banned. Flying drones is also prohibited.
"Cops will be out there to keep you safe, but we ask everyone to stay alert," Tisch said.
The city is warning drivers about rolling street and bridge closures and long delays, and is steering visitors onto public transport. Organisers New York Road Runners painted the blue line marking the course on Wednesday. Waves leave Staten Island between 8:00 and 11:30 a.m. for the Central Park finish, in the 50th year of the five-borough course. Around 60,000 runners and two million spectators are expected.
