Pranavi Urs has become the first Indian woman to win individual golf gold at the Asian Games. The 23-year-old from Mysuru finished on 15 under par (265) at Kasugai Country Club, holding off China's Yin Ruoning, a former world No 1 and major winner, and Singapore's Shannon Tan.
It nearly went wrong early in the final round. Pranavi started with a three-shot lead, then needed three swings to get out of a bunker on the par-4 third and made triple bogey, which dropped her behind Yin. She recovered with three more birdies. One came on the par-5 13th, which she birdied in all four rounds, and it put her back in front with five holes left.
The finish came down to the 18th. Yin's birdie putt hung on the lip and stayed out, so Pranavi needed a par from about a metre to win gold. She holed it. She said she did not know she had won until Tan congratulated her.
With Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar she also took team silver, India's first women's team golf medal at the Games. Three years ago in Hangzhou, Ashok lost a seven-shot final-day lead and settled for silver, and India finished fourth in the team event. Pranavi has not won in three seasons on the Ladies European Tour.
"I like being the first to do things. People will come along to do more but the first will always be the first," she told PTI.
