Frances Tiafoe was two sets down and, later, a break down in the fifth before he found a way past Alex Michelsen on Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) after four hours and 38 minutes to reach a third US Open semi-final.

Michelsen, 22 and ranked No. 46, had gone through the tournament without dropping a set and served at 5-4 in the third for the match. He led 3-0 in the decider too. He is now 0-6 in five-set matches, and wept on Tiafoe's shoulder at the net.

The win puts Tiafoe back inside the world's top 10 for the first time in three years, adding to his New York runs in 2022 and 2024. In the women's draw, Jessica Pegula beat Emma Navarro in an all-American quarter-final and will meet Aryna Sabalenka, still chasing a third straight New York title, in the semi-finals.

“I'm going to enjoy this one, though. Let's go!” Tiafoe told the crowd afterwards.
