The UCI has cancelled the Urban Cycling World Championships, which were due in Riyadh from 3 to 7 November. The event was one of the qualifiers for BMX freestyle park at the LA28 Olympics.
The governing body said the decision followed a joint assessment of recent developments in the region and their effect on the logistics of running the championships, after missile attacks on Riyadh's airport over the past week. It has not yet said what happens to the qualifying places. Two men and two women were due to earn a spot on the LA28 start list in Riyadh, and the UCI says it will announce the sporting consequences shortly.
Australia had already withdrawn its team earlier the same day, citing government travel advice. "AusCycling cannot justify exposing our athletes and staff to these risks," the federation said.
The championships were also to include trials and BMX freestyle flatland. At LA28, the BMX freestyle park competition will be held at the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area.
