Verstappen takes his first Singapore Grand Prix pole after winning the sprint

Leclerc misses out by 0.054s and Hamilton starts third, while Russell's grid penalty sends him from sixth to the back.

Max Verstappen will start the Singapore Grand Prix from pole position for the first time in his career, adding Saturday evening's top spot to his win in the rain-hit sprint earlier the same day.

Lewis Hamilton led the timesheets through Q1 and Q2 and looked the favourite at Marina Bay, but Verstappen's first run in Q3, a 1m 31.373s, held up. Almost nobody improved on their second attempt. Charles Leclerc did, and moved up to second, only 0.054s short. Hamilton qualified third, making it a Ferrari second row behind the Red Bull.

Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris were fourth and fifth. George Russell set the sixth-fastest time, but he will drop to the back because of his engine-change penalty, so everyone classified behind him gains a place. Oscar Piastri, who collided with team mate Norris in the sprint, was seventh, ahead of Pierre Gasly and the Racing Bulls of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

Aston Martin had said the weekend suited them, but both cars went out in Q1. Isack Hadjar's troubles continued after his sprint retirement: he could not set a representative lap and qualified last.

"I'm very happy to be on pole, because this is the one that I wanted." Max Verstappen

The race starts at 8pm local time on Sunday (12:00 UTC).
