Vingegaard strikes first as the Tour de France opens in Barcelona

The 113th Tour de France rolled out of Barcelona on Saturday for the Catalan capital's first Grande Départ, and it was Jonas Vingegaard who landed the opening blow in his rivalry with Tadej Pogacar. Vingegaard's Visma-Lease a Bike team powered to the fastest time in the opening team time trial, a 19.5-kilometre blast through the city that swept past the Sagrada Familia before a short finishing climb overlooking Barcelona.

The result handed Vingegaard the first yellow jersey of the race and, more tellingly, a 12-second advantage over Pogacar, who is chasing a record-equalling fifth Tour title. UAE Team Emirates, starting last in the staggered format, could not match Visma's ride. "It is still a long Tour obviously, but it is a perfect start," Vingegaard said. "My team did an amazing job today."

Behind the two favourites, the clock underlined how tightly bunched the contenders already are. Filippo Ganna sits eight seconds off the lead, Juan Ayuso trails by sixteen, and Remco Evenepoel, another rider expected to challenge for the podium in Paris, is nineteen seconds back after a single stage.

The Barcelona start is a statement for a race that has increasingly looked beyond France for its openings, and the crowds packing the finish suggested the gamble has paid off. From here the race stiffens quickly. The peloton crosses into the French Pyrenees within days, where the first mountains will begin to separate the genuine yellow-jersey candidates from the rest. Three weeks and 21 stages stand between this Barcelona opening and the finish on home soil, but Vingegaard has drawn first blood.
